Vitamin C has been used and found effective in treating chronic infections and cancer through various clinical studies. Of note recently, high dose intravenous vitamin C has been used experimentally to treat moderate to severe Covid-19 infections in China.  The results of the use of vitamin C in this population has been promising.   Dr. Mao stated that his group treated ~50 cases of moderate to severe cases of Covid-19 infection with high dose IVC.  All patients who received IVC improved and there was no mortality. Compared to the average of a 30-day hospital stay for all Covid-19 patients, those patients who received high dose IVC had a hospital stay about 3-5 days shorter than the overall patients. Hospitals in NY are starting to use vitamin C IV treatments in Covid-19 positive patients as well.  The NY hospitals are using vitamin C IV’s as an adjunctive treatment with the use of other medicines such as hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, and blood thinners.  Vitamin C used intravenously is gaining very promising clinical findings as a safe, inexpensive, and effective treatment to improve the outcomes of Covid-19 infections in critically ill patients. This is due to many factors. Vitamin C levels become depleted with severe viral infections such as Covid-19 and H1N1, which leads to high amounts of reactive oxidative species in the tissues. Replacement of this vitamin C helps to combat these inflammatory effects and reduce these ROS levels to a more healthy balance.  Vitamin C also helps to preserve and recycle the body’s own levels of glutathione, which helps to decrease inflammation and support antioxidant levels and detoxification in the body. Vitamin C also has antiviral effects and thus helps to target viral infections directly.

The Windhorse Clinic is currently administering IVC.
